First west Nile Virus Fatality in Extremadura in 2025

A 77-year-old man is the first fatality from West Nile virus in Extremadura in 2025, according to the Extremadura Health Service (SES). The deceased was from the Don Benito-Villanueva Health Area and was hospitalized at the Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital.

Currently,Extremadura has 11 people affected by this disease. Of these, four remain hospitalized at the Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital.

Given this situation, the SES leadership has placed the management of the 8 health areas of Extremadura on alert “to remain in a state of vigilance for any suspicion of cases.”
