Five workers who carried out night maintenance work on the railway tracks have died this morning when they were run over by a train on the outskirts of Turin (northern Italy), in an accident from which two other workers escaped unharmed, although they are under observation.
The five deceased, who have already been identified and were between the ages of 22 and 52, were about to start replace some rails when they were run over near the town of Brandizzo by the train, which was traveling at a speed of 160 kilometerslocal media reported.
The impact was so violent that it dragged the bodies several hundred meters, while two of them managed to avoid the hit of the train, which was not carrying passengers, only wagons on the line between Milan and Turin. These are under observation at the Chivasso hospital.
The railway police and the carabineros (militarized police) of Chivasso are working at the accident site, coordinated by the Ivrea Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors are analyzing surveillance camera footage to try to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and it is probable that the engineer of the train, who was also unharmed and who is in a state of shock, will give a statement in the next few hours, according to the same sources.
