France Floods: Red Alerts Issued as Storm Pedro Approaches

France is battling widespread flooding in the west, with several departments placed on red alert as Storm Pedro approaches. The situation is particularly critical in Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, and Maine-et-Loire, where authorities are bracing for further disruption. Avalanche risks also remain high in the Alps, following recent heavy snowfall.

Red Alerts and Flood Warnings

Météo-France announced on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, that Charente-Maritime has joined Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, and Maine-et-Loire on red alert for “floods.” Nine additional departments are under orange alert: Charente, Ille-et-Vilaine, Indre-et-Loire, Landes, Loire-Atlantique, Morbihan, Sarthe, Tarn-et-Garonne, and Vendée.

Impact and Response

Insurers have launched a “reconnaissance mission” to expedite compensation claims for those affected by the floods, recognizing the “exceptional character” of the widespread damage. The state of natural disaster will be formally recognized following the conclusion of the current flooding episode.

Regional Breakdown

  • Cadillac-sur-Garonne (Gironde): Residents are preparing for potential further risks with the anticipated arrival of new rains and high tidal coefficients.
  • Marmande (Lot-et-Garonne): Residents are cleaning up and assessing damage during a temporary lull in the weather.
  • Couthures-sur-Garonne (Lot-et-Garonne): The town remains cut off due to rising waters, with residents relying on community solidarity.
  • Villard (Savoie): The hamlet is isolated due to an avalanche that occurred from high altitude, though no casualties have been reported.
  • Alps: A major avalanche occurred in Valloire (Savoie), resulting in at least one death and two injuries. Two skiers were also killed in an avalanche in the Hautes-Alpes.

Storm Pedro and Future Outlook

A temporary lull in the weather is expected today, but Storm Pedro is forecast to bring further rain and disruption, particularly tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Brittany is expected to be particularly affected. The Alps will continue to face a high risk of avalanches due to strong winds and recent snowfall.

Recent Storm Damage

A violent storm recently swept through two villages near Maubeuge, in the North of France, causing damage to roofs, pylons, and garages. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
