Flyers’ Briere Stays Course at Trade Deadline, Prioritizing Future Amid Playoff Push

TORONTO — Daniel Briere, general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, remains focused on building a sustainable contender, even as his team unexpectedly finds itself in the thick of the playoff race. Despite a recent three-game winning streak, including a 3-2 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, Briere signaled he is unlikely to deviate from his long-term plan by acquiring rental players before the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.

The win against Toronto propelled the Flyers to 28-21-11, positioning them just four points behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference . However, Briere emphasized that short-term gains won’t compromise the team’s future.

Staying the Course

“Nope,” Briere said with a grin, when asked if the team’s playoff positioning had altered his approach to the deadline. “We will see. I mean, we’re in no rush to to make a decision. You know, what matters for us is obviously the future. We’re still building for the future.”

Briere acknowledged he’s open to improving the team if a move benefits both the present and the future, but indicated rental players – those acquired for a short-term boost without long-term implications – are not a priority .

Potential Ristolainen Trade?

Speculation surrounds defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen as a potential trade candidate , but Briere remained tight-lipped on specific players. Cam York expressed a desire for the team to remain intact, citing their recent strong play.

League-Wide Hesitation

Briere noted a league-wide trend of teams hesitating to declare themselves sellers, as many remain in contention. He referenced conversations with Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill and Utah Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong, who both predicted a flurry of activity closer to the deadline .

Evaluating the Current Roster

The Flyers have shown resilience, particularly after a challenging stretch in January and February. Briere praised the team’s ability to bounce back and their refusal to quit, even while chasing playoff contention. He highlighted the successful acquisition of Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks as an example of a move aligned with the team’s long-term vision .

Balancing Present and Future

“The goal is always to make the playoffs, but at the same time, we’re trying to build a team that’s going to become a contender for years to come,” Briere explained. “It’s not about making the playoffs one year then missing the next. We want to build a team that sustains it year after year. So, that’s why you have to be careful and look at the entire project for the future that way.”

Philadelphia defeated Toronto 3-2 in a shootout, with Noah Cates scoring two goals and Dan Vladar making 29 saves. Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras scored in the shootout to secure the win .
