CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith once joked about his stoic coach, Tom Landry, and his “perfectionist” nature, “If he was married to Raquel Welch, he’d expect her to cook.”
It appears former baseball player David Justice might have taken that joke to heart.
Justice, who played 3 seasons in Cleveland from 1997 to 2000, appeared last week on the podcast All the Smoke and discussed his former marriage with actress Halle Berry.Justice and Berry, a Cleveland native, were married from 1993 to 1997.
Reasons for the Split
When talking about why the marriage failed, Justice offered some interesting reasons, according to People.
“My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t where it needed to be,” Justice said on the podcast. “I was too focused on her being perfect, and I didn’t understand that nobody is perfect.”
the Pressure of Fame
Justice also discussed the challenges of being married to someone as famous as Halle Berry. He admitted that he placed unrealistic expectations on her, stemming from his own insecurities and a desire for her to fit a certain mold.
“I wanted her to be… I wanted her to be what I thought she should be,” Justice explained. “And that’s not fair to her. She’s a human being.”
Reflecting on the Past
Justice acknowledged that his behavior was unfair and that he has since grown and learned from the experience. He expressed regret for the pain he caused Berry and emphasized that he now understands the importance of accepting people for who they are, flaws and all.
“I was wrong. I was just wrong,” Justice stated. “I’m sorry for that.”
