Porsche unveils 975 RSE Formula E race car for Gen4 era Porsche has unveiled its new Formula E race car, the 975 RSE, marking the German automaker’s entry into the championship’s fourth generation (Gen4) of electric race cars. The vehicle complies with Gen4 regulations and is set to debut in Season 13 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The 975 RSE delivers 600 kW of power, equivalent to 816 PS, representing a significant increase over the Gen3 Evo specification’s 350 kW output. This power boost enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating Formula E car in history. A key advancement in the Gen4 design is the implementation of permanent all-wheel drive. Unlike previous generations that engaged the front motor only during specific “boost” modes, the 975 RSE utilizes active torque distribution across all four wheels at all times. This system eliminates wheel spin and provides improved traction, particularly when accelerating out of tight corners on street circuits. The car features significantly increased aerodynamic downforce, a first for Formula E. Combined with new tires and the all-wheel-drive system, this enhances grip and allows for higher cornering speeds. Porsche notes that whereas downforce improves performance, it also increases drag and energy consumption, requiring careful management during races. The 975 RSE achieved its first track run in November 2025 at Porsche’s Weissach development facility. By early April 2026, the car had accumulated 1,860 kilometers of testing across multiple venues, including Monteblanco, Almería and Varano. Porsche confirms that six 975 RSE vehicles will be used by its factory teams in the inaugural Gen4 season. The car’s name pays tribute to the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport in 2026. The Gen4 era represents the largest performance leap in electric motorsport to date, with Formula E vehicles now reaching top speeds exceeding 330 km/h. Porsche states that the current generation of Formula E cars operates on a performance level comparable to Formula 2 machinery, reflecting the rapid evolution of electric race cars since the series began in 2014.
