Six Toll Road Sections to be Free During 2026 Eid Homecoming

Six toll road sections across Java and Sumatra will be opened for free during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming period, as part of a government initiative to ease traffic congestion. The policy applies to functionally open toll roads, allowing travelers to use these routes without tariffs during the homecoming operational period.

Free Toll Roads to Ease Congestion

The Indonesian government anticipates a significant surge in travelers during Eid al-Fitr, with projections estimating around 144 million people will be traveling throughout the country according to the Ministry of Transportation. The free access to these toll road sections aims to distribute traffic and support smoother journeys for those returning to their hometowns.

Toll Road Sections Included

The following toll road sections will be free of charge during the 2026 Eid homecoming:

Trans Java

  • Japek II South – Functional (54.75 km)
  • Jogja-Bawen – Functional (4.85 km)
  • Jogja-Solo – Functional (11.48 km)
  • Probolinggo-Banyuwangi Phase I – Functional (49.68 km)

Trans Sumatra

  • Sigli-Banda Aceh Section I – Functional (23.9 km)
  • Palembang-Betung Sections I and II – Functional (53.6 km)

Traffic Flow Predictions

The movement of homecoming traffic is expected to initiate around Thursday, March 12, 2026. The first peak in traffic volume is anticipated on Friday, March 13, and Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The return flow will commence on Monday, March 23, 2026, with peak return traffic expected on Tuesday, March 24, and Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Coordination for Smooth Travel

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is coordinating with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations during the “mudik” or mass homecoming exodus as reported by Tempo.co. This includes preparing five key sea crossing routes between Java and Sumatra to facilitate travel and manage the expected high volume of travelers.
