Romania Braces for Winter Storm: Heavy Snow and Deep Freeze to Impact Nation
Romania is preparing for a significant winter storm that is expected to bring heavy snowfall and dangerously low temperatures throughout much of the country from Sunday, February 16th, to Wednesday, February 21st.
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued yellow weather codes across multiple regions, warning of potentially dangerous conditions that could disrupt transportation and daily life.
Viscollie Snowfall Raises Concerns
The most concerning weather phenomena is expected to be "viscollie snowfall" – heavy snowfall combined with strong winds – primarily affecting counties in the south and southeastern parts of the country.
Counties including Constanța, Ialomița, Călărași, Giurgiu, Teleorman, Ilfov, and Bucharest are under yellow code for viscollie snowfall. Snow accumulations of 10 to 20 centimeters are anticipated, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 45 km/h. This combination creates hazardous driving conditions, with slippery roads and significantly reduced visibility.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel during this period,” states an ANM spokesperson.
Freezing Temperatures Threaten Infrastructure and Vulnerable Populations
Adding to the winter weather concerns, frost advisories are in effect for much of Romania.
Temperatures are predicted to plummet, with minimums reaching -16 to -10 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas and potentially dropping below freezing in other regions.
ANM officials emphasize the potential risks posed by the extreme cold to vulnerable individuals and infrastructure.
“It is essential to take precautions,” urges an ANM official. “This includes wearing warm clothing, avoiding prolonged exposure to the cold, and protecting pipes and water systems from freezing.”
Bucharest Faces Weeks of Cold Spell
The capital city of Bucharest will experience a prolonged cold spell throughout the week, characterized by persistent snowfall and accumulations. Sunday’s high is expected to be around -3 degrees Celsius, dipping to -4 degrees Celsius at night. Similar conditions are anticipated for Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures hovering near -3 to -4 degrees Celsius.
Staying Informed and Prepared
The hazardous weather conditions underscore the importance of staying informed about the latest weather updates and taking necessary precautions.
Citizens should:
- Stay indoors as much as possible, particularly during periods of heavy snowfall and strong winds.
- If traveling, thoroughly check road conditions and allow extra time for journeys.
- Dress warmly in layers, covering your head, hands, and feet.
- Be aware of the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
- Ensure your home is well-insulated and protect pipes from freezing.
- Keep a supply of essential items on hand, such as food, water, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
By taking these precautions, Romanians can minimize the risks associated with severe winter weather and ensure their safety during this challenging period.
