Munster Rugby Part Ways with Head Coach Graham Rowntree

Munster Rugby has announced the departure of head coach Graham Rowntree just six games into the BKT United Rugby Championship season. The decision comes following a disappointing run of results, including three consecutive losses, culminating in a 41-24 defeat to the Sharks in Durban.

The Englishman, who held a contract until summer 2026, arrived in Munster in 2019 as forwards coach before taking over the head coach role in summer 2022, succeeding Johann van Graan.

A Mixed Tenure

Rowntree’s tenure at Munster saw both triumphs and disappointments. He led the team to a historic URC Championship title in 2023, ending a 12-year trophy drought. He also guided Munster to top the regular season table in 2024, only to suffer a disheartening semi-final defeat to Glasgow Warriors. However, Munster’s European campaign faltered under his leadership, failing to progress beyond the round of 16 in each season, losing away to the Sharks and Northampton Saints.

“We would like to thank Graham for his passion and dedication to Munster Rugby over the past five years,” stated Munster rugby CEO Ian Flanagan. “I wish him and his family all the very best for the future on behalf of Munster Rugby.”

Looking Ahead

Munster’s Head of Rugby Operations, Ian Costello, has been appointed interim Head Coach as the club initiates a search for Rowntree’s successor.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here in Munster working with a very talented group of players and coaches,” Rowntree reflected. “I would like to thank the wider Munster family for all the support they have shown me in my time here. Now is the right stage for my family and I to look forward to a new chapter.”

Munster Rugby will now focus on rebuilding its campaign under Costello’s interim leadership. Stay tuned for updates on the permanent replacement for Graham Rowntree.
