A Presidential Intervention in FIFA Disciplinary Affairs
FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed he received a phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump concerning the status of American footballer Folarin Balogun. The call followed a red card issued to Balogun during a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina—a card that was subsequently rescinded.
Infantino stated he informed the U.S. leader that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee operates as an independent body and that the case would follow standard legal procedures. Despite this, FIFA ultimately lifted the suspension on a Sunday without providing a public explanation for the decision.
The Independence of Judicial Bodies

The reversal of Balogun’s suspension has drawn intense scrutiny regarding the autonomy of FIFA’s internal processes. Addressing the controversy, Infantino issued an official statement regarding the conversation.
“I have explained that there is an ongoing legal process involving the independent judicial bodies of FIFA and that the case will be decided by the competent authorities in due course,” Infantino noted. He emphasized that he explicitly informed President Trump of the committee’s independence during their exchange.
Belgium Mounts Formal Legal Challenge
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has launched a formal dispute over the decision. With Belgium scheduled to face the United States in the Round of 16, the federation initially appealed to the FIFA Appeals Committee.
After that committee dismissed the application as inadmissible, the RBFA signaled its intent to escalate. The federation stated that if Balogun appears on the referee’s official team sheet for the upcoming match, Belgium will formally challenge the player’s eligibility to compete.
Hummels Decries Perception of Political Influence
The handling of the matter has sparked a heated debate regarding tournament governance. Former national player and television analyst Mats Hummels did not mince words, labeling Infantino’s response an “absolute non-statement.”
Hummels warned that the appearance of political influence undermines the sport. “It shouldn’t happen that one creates the impression that the president of a host country calls and gets decisions reversed,” Hummels said. He argued that such perceptions damage the tournament’s competitive integrity and create a sense of unfairness.
Tensions Rise Ahead of World Cup Showdown
This incident unfolds against the backdrop of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States. The controversy highlights the friction between high-level political interest and established regulatory frameworks. As the United States and Belgium prepare to face off, the status of Balogun’s eligibility remains the central point of contention for both teams and tournament organizers.
