Yakin Commits to Four-Year Extension
Murat Yakin will remain at the helm of the Swiss national team through 2028. Despite a stinging 3-1 quarterfinal exit against Argentina in Kansas City, the manager has dismissed speculation regarding his departure, confirming he intends to see out his current contract with the Swiss Football Association.

Dismissing the Spotlight
Yakin addressed his professional future during a final press conference, brushing aside rumors—and even an odd comparison from entertainer James Corden, who likened the coach to a James Bond villain. Yakin made his stance clear: he has no interest in a career change. “I am still very happy to be a coach and extremely proud to be the Swiss national coach,” Yakin said. “I have the desire and the joy to work with this team.” Having managed the side since 2021, he emphasized he has “no thoughts” about pursuing a different path.
Managing a Generational Transition
The squad is currently navigating a period of significant upheaval. Following the 2024 European Championship, stalwarts Xherdan Shaqiri and Yann Sommer retired from international duty, leaving a void in leadership. Yet, Yakin remains optimistic about the current roster’s potential. “The mix of young and experienced players in the team is good,” he noted. While internal reviews of the squad are scheduled for the coming days, Yakin confirmed that, as of the final press conference, no players had signaled an immediate intent to retire.

Controversy in Kansas City
The World Cup campaign concluded on a sour note in Kansas City. A 3-1 defeat after extra time was defined by friction with the officiating crew, led by Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro. Yakin was particularly incensed by the decision to issue a second yellow card to forward Breel Embolo for simulation, a call that forced Switzerland to play the final stages of the match with ten men. Despite the frustration of the loss, Yakin insisted the team is “far from the end” of its development cycle.
