‘Game of Thrones: The Mad King’ Set to Premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company This Summer

Fans of George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros are in for a treat as “Game of Thrones” is heading to the stage. The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will premiere “Game of Thrones: The Mad King” this summer at its flagship Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

A Prequel Exploring Westeros’ Past

The play, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, delves into a legendary chapter of Westeros’ history, set over a decade and a half before the events of the HBO series Game of Thrones. The story unfolds after a long winter, centering around a jousting tournament at Harrenhal and a brewing plot against the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen.

Familiar Faces in Their Youth

The production will feature younger versions of iconic characters, including Ned Stark, his sister Lyanna, Jamie Lannister, and Robert Baratheon. Director Dominic Cooke notes that these characters will be recognizable to fans but presented at an earlier stage in their lives (Deadline). Varys will similarly make an appearance. The play is described as having a “star-crossed lovers vibe” reminiscent of Romeo, and Juliet.

Collaboration with George R.R. Martin

The production has been a multi-year effort, with George R.R. Martin actively involved throughout the process. Playwright Duncan Macmillan described Martin as “an incredibly reliable collaborator and protector of his characters and his world” (Deadline).

Ticket Information and Future Plans

Priority booking for “Game of Thrones: The Mad King” begins on April 14, 2026, with public booking to be announced in April as well (Westeros.org). While the premiere is set for Stratford-upon-Avon, there is currently no confirmation whether the production will move to London’s West Conclude after its initial run.

Full details of the RSC season will be announced on February 26, 2026 (Westeros.org).
