Sebastian Vettel Open to Le Mans with Verstappen, Considers Red Bull Return
Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel has indicated a willingness to partner with Max Verstappen at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while as well leaving the door open for a potential return to Red Bull Racing in some capacity.
Vettel and Verstappen: A Potential Le Mans Pairing
Vettel, who retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season, has maintained a close relationship with current champion Max Verstappen. The two drivers frequently communicate, with Vettel stating he speaks to Verstappen after every Grand Prix. According to Vettel, discussions about a potential joint effort at Le Mans have taken place. “If it’s right, we’ll drive at Le Mans together,” Vettel told Servus TV.
Verstappen has also expressed enthusiasm for the idea, stating he would be keen to participate, but only with a competitive team. “I would love to do that. But of course only if we can fight for victories. You have to work with the right team,” Verstappen said after test drives in Bahrain as reported by Formula 1.
Vettel’s Testing and Considerations
Vettel tested a Porsche 963 in late 2023 and was actively seeking the “right partnership” as of July 2025. Verstappen has also been exploring other racing series, including success in the NLS race at the Nürburgring and plans to compete in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in May.
Potential Return to Red Bull
While a return to Formula 1 behind the wheel isn’t off the table, Vettel has also expressed interest in a role within the sport, potentially with Red Bull. He acknowledged a strong connection to the team due to his past success, winning four consecutive World Championships with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 as reported by Newsweek. But, he also emphasized positive relationships with other teams.
Vettel indicated that any potential role would need to be a good fit. “It depends on what the role is exactly and whether it suits me. Where I say that I’m keen on it and it’s a challenge and it’s kind of tingling,” he revealed according to Newsweek.
Previous talks with Red Bull senior advisor Helmut Marko regarding a potential role after Christian Horner’s departure did not progress significantly, with Marko citing the demands of the team restructuring as a barrier. Marko stated that any role would be a full-time commitment, not something Vettel could undertake for just a few races as reported by Newsweek.
Vettel’s Perspective on the Current F1 Landscape
Vettel has observed the changes within Red Bull and the broader Formula 1 landscape, noting his surprise at Christian Horner’s exit. He acknowledged the significant impact Horner had on the team, stating Horner left “sizeable footsteps” as reported by Formula 1.
