Gary Sánchez Signs One-Year Deal with Orioles

Veteran catcher/designated hitter Gary Sánchez is officially heading to Baltimore. According to a source speaking with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Sánchez has agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles.

While the club hasn’t confirmed the deal yet, this move provides the Orioles with a powerful bat for their lineup.

Sánchez Looking to Rebound

Though Sánchez hasn’t reached the heights he achieved during his early days with the New York Yankees, he still possesses significant home run potential. Last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, Sánchez demonstrated this by hitting 11 homers in 89 games. This followed a strong 2023 campaign with the San Diego Padres, where he launched 19 homers in just 72 games.

Hitting Highlights and Career Trajectory

Combining those two seasons and a brief stint with the New York Mets, Sánchez has totaled 30 home runs, 84 RBIs, and a 101 OPS+ in 164 games. He also reached new heights early in his career, placing second in the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year voting after smashing 20 homers in just 53 games with the Yankees. He followed that up with a 33-homer season, earning his first All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award while garnering down-ballot AL MVP votes. While he maintained his home run threat status in the years that followed, Sánchez struggled with his batting average, hitting just .187 over 166 games from 2020-21 before being traded to the Minnesota Twins during Spring Training in 2022.

Looking Forward

The Orioles will be hoping that Sánchez can rediscover his dominant form and provide a significant boost to their offense. His power at the plate has the potential to make him a valuable asset for Baltimore as they continue to build towards contention.
