Gemini AI Gets a Major Android Interface Update: Enhanced Tools Menu Now Available
Google’s Gemini AI assistant is becoming more accessible on Android devices with a significant redesign of its overlay interface. The update, currently rolling out to users of the Google app beta (version 17.7), provides expanded access to the prompt box and a dedicated Tools menu directly within the Android experience.
What’s New in the Gemini Overlay?
The redesigned Gemini overlay now features a more prominent prompt box and integrates the Gemini Tools menu into the pill-shaped overlay. This menu appears to the right of the existing attachment icon, with the “Ask Gemini” hint centered to accommodate the new feature. The update aims to provide users with quicker access to Gemini’s capabilities without leaving their current app.
Accessing Gemini’s Tools
Tapping the Tools menu unlocks a range of AI-powered functionalities, including:
- Create image: Visualize and edit images using Gemini’s image generation capabilities.
- Create video: Bring ideas to life by generating videos with Gemini.
- Create music: Compose music using Gemini’s AI music creation tools.
- Canvas: Utilize Gemini to create and edit documents or brainstorm ideas with visual aids.
- Deep research: Generate detailed reports on various topics.
- Guided learning: Study and learn new subjects with Gemini’s assistance.
Google AI subscribers will also locate a toggle for Personal Intelligence within the Tools menu.
Interface Changes and Beta Availability
The design of the new overlay closely mirrors the interface within the full Gemini app, but now includes descriptions for each tool. When typing, the overlay dynamically adjusts from a pill shape to a two-line, rounded rectangle. Currently, the model switcher is not included in this redesign.
This update is currently available in the Google app beta (version 17.7) and is rolling out to users gradually. It is not yet live on all Google Accounts.
Gemini Live and Future Developments
In addition to the Tools menu update, Google is also testing a new floating pill for Gemini Live, previewed earlier this month [9to5Google]. This suggests further enhancements to Gemini’s accessibility and real-time interaction capabilities are on the horizon.
Expanding Gemini’s Capabilities
Google continues to expand Gemini’s functionality, with recent additions including upgraded image editing features, screen-sharing capabilities in Gemini Live conversations and the ability to create custom Gems for specific tasks [Android.com]. The introduction of multi-step task automation for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices is also in development, allowing Gemini to handle repetitive tasks like booking rides or reordering food [The Keyword].
