George Russell: New F1 Regulations Delivering More Engaging Racing, Resembling Karting
Mercedes driver George Russell has emerged as a vocal supporter of the new Formula 1 regulations for the 2026 season, asserting that the changes are creating more competitive and exciting races. His positive assessment contrasts with criticisms from drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
The 2026 regulations introduce a significant shift in power unit technology, with a greater emphasis on electrical power, requiring drivers to strategically manage battery deployment and recharge during races. This has led to a more dynamic racing style, characterized by frequent overtaking maneuvers and close battles.
‘Yo-Yo’ Battles and Overtake Mode
Russell acknowledges the “yo-yo” effect created by the new regulations, where drivers trade positions frequently due to the interplay of overtake mode and battery management. He explained that drivers trailing behind can utilize a boost button up to 330 km/h, even as the leader is limited to 290 km/h, creating a speed differential similar to the previous Drag Reduction System (DRS).
“It isn’t DRS, but it works in a similar pattern for the speed delta. So, I think it’s been quite interesting, quite fun, and I think some even with diehards maybe aren’t disliking it as much as they did maybe a week ago, but we just still need to give it a chance,” Russell stated.
A Return to Karting-Style Racing
Russell believes the new regulations have fostered a level of competition not seen in Formula 1 for some time, with multiple drivers consistently battling for the lead. He likened the current racing environment to karting, where close proximity and frequent overtaking are commonplace.
“Lewis [Hamilton] last week, it felt like he was managing a bit and letting Charles [Leclerc] and I tussle it out, and then he was ready to pounce,” Russell said. “And then today. Lewis and I were tussling and Charles was ready to pounce, so there’s a lot going on, but it makes it quite fun and definitely feels more like a go-kart racing in the past – the top three, top four drivers are all in contention. I don’t ever remember Formula 1 being like that, where you can have three or four cars all fighting for the same position truly on track.”
Championship Standings
As of the Chinese Grand Prix, George Russell leads the 2026 championship standings with an 11-point advantage, having secured victories in both the Australian Grand Prix and the Shanghai sprint race. He qualified second for the Chinese Grand Prix behind teammate Kimi Antonelli.
The new regulations have sparked debate within the paddock, but Russell’s positive outlook suggests that the changes are ultimately enhancing the spectacle of Formula 1 racing.
