Georgian Painter Vaho Muskheli Exhibits “Signs” in Riga, Latvia

Art lovers in Latvia have the chance to observe the function of Georgian painter Vaho Muskheli with an exhibition of his work at the ‘Istaba’ gallery in Rīga, as reported by Latvian Radio.

Muskheli, who has lived in Seattle, America, for 30 years and maintains an active artistic life, remains connected to Georgia, where he continues to exhibit and teach at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts.

This marks the first exhibition of Vaho Muskheli’s works in Latvia, featuring a selection of small-format works and sketches. These pieces reveal his originality, masterful technique, and characteristic themes, often presenting multi-layered messages about the relationship between individuals and the world, both secular and spiritual.

A Return to Latvia After 50 Years

Muskheli holds warm memories of Latvia dating back to the 1970s. As a student at the Georgian Academy of Arts, he participated in a student exchange program, spending two months in Salacgrīva.

His paintings create a unique world populated by images where the human body often merges with animal and bird forms. These images are frequently depicted in motion or at symbolic boundaries, evoking a sense of tension and fate. The paintings’ layered colors appear both transparent and heavy, creating a feeling of antiquity, mystery, and surreality.

Political Commentary in His Art

The exhibition includes abstract images alongside recognizable figures, such as caricatured depictions of Vladimir Putin, Sergei Lavrov, and other individuals the artist views negatively. The solo exhibition presents a range of work, from sketches and nature studies to philosophical compositions.

Vaho Muskheli’s exhibition “Signs” is on view at the Istaba gallery until April 23. More details can be found here.
