Russia’s Offensive Near Chasiv Yar Stalled – Institute for the Study of War
Russian forces have largely stalled in their offensive operations near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, despite continued efforts over the past two weeks.
This is according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Analysts note that Russian troops have made limited gains, primarily seizing open fields and tree lines, but have not broken through Ukrainian defensive lines within the city itself.
The ISW suggests that Russian forces are likely attempting to encircle Chasiv Yar, but their progress is hampered by strong Ukrainian resistance and challenging terrain.
“Russian forces likely aim to encircle Chasiv Yar from the north and south to isolate the city and degrade Ukrainian defensive positions,” the report reads. “However, Russian forces have not made sufficient gains to threaten the encirclement of Chasiv Yar.”
The offensive near Chasiv Yar is considered crucial for Russia as capturing the city could open a path towards larger Ukrainian-held cities like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Though, the slow pace of the offensive raises questions about Russia’s ability to achieve a significant breakthrough in the near future.
The ISW also highlights that Russian forces are facing increasing personnel and equipment losses in the area, further complicating their offensive efforts.
