Gerry Adams Faces Civil Suit Over IRA Bombings

Former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams is currently facing a civil suit in London brought by victims of IRA bombings. The case centers around allegations that Adams was a leading member of the IRA, a claim he denies.

The Court Case Unfolds

The proceedings began with a striking contrast in imagery. While the first day saw Adams in a bulletproof vest, the second day featured him wearing a traditional Aran wool sweater. Footage from RTÉ’s Reeling in the Years from 1986 was presented, showing Adams and Martin McGuinness accompanying Evelyn Glenholme, an alleged IRA member, through a crowd in Dublin as she was pursued by gardaí. The footage included a detective firing a warning shot in the air, set to the soundtrack of Wham’s “The Edge of Heaven.”

The claimants’ barrister, Anne Studd KC, argued that the footage was evidence of Adams’s involvement with the IRA. Adams, now 77, reportedly appeared unfazed by the presentation.

Witness Testimony

Shane Paul O’Doherty, a former IRA man testifying for the plaintiffs – John Clark, Jonathan Ganesh, and Barry Laycock – identified Adams as an IRA member in a 1970s photograph showing him wearing a beret at an IRA funeral. O’Doherty stated that wearing such a beret would have attracted the attention of authorities and was indicative of IRA membership.

Ganesh and Laycock testified about the devastating impact of the bombings on their lives. Ganesh, injured in the 1996 docklands bombing, described struggling with mental health issues and alcoholism in the aftermath. Laycock, a railway worker who survived the 1996 Arndale attack, stated he pursued the case to seek justice for IRA victims. Clark, injured in the 1973 Old Bailey bombing, was unable to appear in court due to ill health.

Defense Arguments

Adams’s legal team maintains that the case is based on “hearsay” and is a “fallacy.” A central point of their defense is that the claim is time-barred. James Robottom, one of Adams’s barristers, questioned O’Doherty’s significance within the IRA during the 1970s.

Background

Gerry Adams served as the president of Sinn Féin from 1983 to 2018. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Louth from 2011 to 2020 and a Member of the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly for Belfast West. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Belfast West from 1983 to 1992 and again from 1997 to 2011, though he followed Sinn Féin’s policy of abstentionism in the UK Parliament. Adams was born on October 6, 1948, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The case continues with further evidence expected to be presented.
