GLP-1 Drugs Show Potential for type 1 Diabetes Management
Originally developed to address type 2 diabetes, medications in the GLP-1 class are now being investigated for their potential benefits in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Recent research, unveiled at a major diabetes conference, suggests a promising avenue for this submission. The study demonstrated that patients utilizing a GLP-1 drug experienced improved blood glucose control and greater weight loss compared to a control group. This indicates a potential for these medications to positively impact key health markers in those managing type 1 diabetes.
This rigorously designed, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial involved 72 adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, all of whom relied on automated insulin delivery systems for their type 1 diabetes management. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving weekly 1-milligram injections of semaglutide – the GLP-1 drug and dosage favored at the study’s inception five years ago – and the other receiving a placebo.
