Google VP Warns Two AI Startup Types Face Trouble

The generative AI boom has led to a surge in startups, but not all are poised for success. Darren Mowry, who leads Google’s global startup organization across Cloud, DeepMind and Alphabet, cautions that companies built around Large Language Model (LLM) wrappers and AI aggregators are exhibiting warning signs of potential failure.

The Trouble with LLM Wrappers

LLM wrappers are startups that build a product or user experience layer on top of existing large language models like Claude, GPT, or Gemini to address a specific problem. Mowry warns that simply “white-labeling” these models without substantial differentiation is a risky strategy. “If you’re really just counting on the back-end model to do all the work and you’re almost white-labeling that model, the industry doesn’t have a lot of patience for that anymore,” Mowry stated in an interview with TechCrunch .

He emphasizes the need for “deep, wide moats” – significant competitive advantages – that are either horizontally differentiated or highly specialized for a particular vertical market. Startups need to move beyond simply adding a user interface to a pre-existing model. Successful examples of LLM wrappers that have established these moats include Cursor, a GPT-powered coding assistant, and Harvey AI, a legal AI assistant .

The Challenges Facing AI Aggregators

AI aggregators take a different approach, combining multiple LLMs into a single interface or API layer. This allows users to access various models and route queries accordingly. Even as platforms like Perplexity and OpenRouter have gained traction, Mowry suggests their growth is slowing. He argues that users are increasingly seeking “some intellectual property built in” to ensure they are directed to the most appropriate model for their specific needs .

The Need for Sustainable Product Value

The landscape has shifted since mid-2024, when OpenAI launched its ChatGPT store, making it easier for simple LLM wrappers to gain traction. Now, building sustainable product value is paramount. Startups must demonstrate a clear and unique value proposition beyond simply providing access to a powerful language model.
