Google I/O 2026: What to Expect from AI, Android, and XR
Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, is scheduled to take place on May 19-20, 2026, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with online access also available. The event is expected to showcase the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, Android, and extended reality (XR), alongside potential updates to other Google products, and platforms.
Android 17 and Wear OS 7
Google has shifted its major Android release cycle, with significant updates now arriving mid-year. Android 17, codenamed ‘Cinnamon Bun,’ is currently in beta testing, with the first beta released recently. While initial beta versions show limited UI changes, Google is anticipated to unveil more substantial features and UI improvements at I/O 2026. The focus may include optimizations for large-screen devices.
Alongside Android 17, Google is also expected to announce Wear OS 7. Given the significant improvements introduced in Wear OS 6, including Material 3 Expressive and performance upgrades, Wear OS 7 may focus on refinements and further optimizations.
Android XR Software and Hardware Updates
Google is heavily invested in XR technology, having introduced Android XR as a unified platform. I/O 2026 is likely to feature updates on the platform’s progress and potential partnerships to expand its ecosystem. Currently, Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset utilizes Android XR, and Google aims to collaborate with more brands to broaden adoption.
Google is also developing a lighter version of Android XR specifically for smart glasses. The company has reportedly finalized navigation and control documentation for these glasses and shared it with developers. A potential preview of a commercial smart glasses product, developed in collaboration with Samsung (who plans to launch a Meta Ray-Ban competitor this year), may be showcased at I/O 2026. These glasses are rumored to include a 12 MP camera with autofocus and a Qualcomm AR chipset.
Updates on Google’s Unified Desktop OS (Aluminium OS)
Reports suggest Google is working on a replacement desktop OS for ChromeOS, internally referred to as ‘Aluminium OS.’ I/O 2026 could be the venue for its official unveiling. This potential OS aims to bring a standalone Android-based system to Chromebooks and traditional PCs, supporting windowed apps, a taskbar, and multitasking, with Gemini potentially playing a central role.
Gemini and AI Upgrades
A significant portion of Google I/O 2026 is expected to be dedicated to AI advancements and Gemini. Google recently enhanced Gemini with features like Personal Intelligence and an AI-powered inbox in Gmail. Further integration of Gemini across Google’s product portfolio is anticipated, potentially including increased control over apps and system actions on Android devices. Updates related to the collaboration between Google and Apple to integrate Gemini into Apple’s AI models and Siri may also be presented. Updates to Search, Chrome, and Google Workspace are also expected, building on the recent introduction of the Universal Commerce Protocol for agentic shopping experiences.
Google I/O 2026 promises to be a pivotal event, showcasing the company’s latest innovations and providing a glimpse into the future of AI, Android, and XR.
