Slippery Roads and Ice Warnings in Western Norway

Western Norway is experiencing treacherous road conditions due to a combination of rain, freezing temperatures and ice, leading to numerous reports of slippery surfaces and several incidents. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and allow extra travel time.

Road Conditions and Warnings

As of Saturday morning, February 21, 2026, the Norwegian Road Administration reported widespread slippery conditions, particularly in Nordhordland and Øygarden. Nearly 200 calls were received from motorists across Vestland county reporting difficult driving conditions. A yellow danger warning for ice is currently in effect for Western Norway, according to Yr.no.

Incidents and Response

A vehicle was involved in an accident in Sunnfjord around 0920, where a female driver lost control and collided with a rock wall on Naustdalsvegen. Fortunately, her injuries were not serious, according to police reports. Contractors have deployed all available salt trucks and began salting operations overnight to combat the icy conditions.

Regional Variations

County roads appear to be generally smoother than European and national roads, according to Rolf Einar Vågheim, a traffic operator for the Norwegian Road Administration. Reports of slippery conditions also came in from Loddefjord, Os, and Sogn og Fjordane. Several pavements around Bergen were reported as very slippery, and the Urban Environment Agency has deployed crews to apply salt and grit to bus pockets and sidewalks.

Improving Conditions

Traffic operator Rolf Einar Vågheim noted a significant decrease in call volume after 11:00, suggesting that the sunshine began to improve conditions. Whereas occasional reports of slippery roads continue, the situation has largely calmed down.

Safety Recommendations

Authorities strongly advise drivers to take it easy, reduce speed, and be prepared for longer travel times. Pedestrians are also urged to be cautious of slippery pavements.
