Google Messages Update: Control Smart Reply with ‘Tap to Draft’

Google Messages is gaining a new feature that gives users more control over its Smart Reply functionality. Instead of instantly sending suggested replies with a single tap, users will soon be able to edit the message before it’s sent, thanks to a new “Tap to Draft” option.

What is Smart Reply?

Smart Reply uses on-device artificial intelligence to generate contextually relevant responses to incoming messages. For example, if you receive a message asking, “Should I meet you at the Diner at 5 pm?”, Smart Reply might suggest options like “I’ll be there” or “I am on my way.” Traditionally, tapping one of these suggestions immediately sends the message.

The Problem with “Tap to Send”

The current default setting, “Tap to Send,” sends the selected Smart Reply instantly. This can lead to accidental messages or responses that contain typos or don’t fully convey the intended message. Users have expressed a need for a way to review and refine these suggestions before they are sent.

Introducing “Tap to Draft”

The new update, available in beta version 20260303_00_RC00 of Google Messages, introduces “Tap to Draft.” This option, previously tested as “Tap to Edit” earlier in the year, sends the selected Smart Reply to the message composition field, allowing you to edit it before sending. This provides a moment to pause, review, and add further details.

How to Enable “Tap to Draft”

To switch from “Tap to Send” to “Tap to Draft,” follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Messages app.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner of the app.
  3. Select “Messages settings” then “Suggestions.”
  4. The default setting will be “Tap to Send.” Toggle the switch off to enable “Tap to Draft.”

Your chosen setting will be saved when you exit the app.

Availability

As of March 8, 2026, the “Tap to Draft” feature is not yet available in the stable version of Google Messages. It is currently available to users running the beta version of the app, such as on a Pixel 6 Pro.

Google’s Ongoing Improvements to Messages

Google continues to refine and improve the Google Messages app, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the user experience. The introduction of “Tap to Draft” is a direct response to user feedback and a step towards more thoughtful and controlled communication.
