Gophers Hockey Faces Penn State in Big Ten Tournament
The Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team will face Penn State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday night, marking a novel chapter for the conference with a single-elimination format. This comes after a regular season that saw the Gophers finish with an 11-21-3 record, securing them the sixth seed in the tournament.
New Tournament Format
This year’s Big Ten hockey tournament features a new single-elimination format for the first round, a departure from the previous three-game series. The field will be reseeded after the first round, and all subsequent games will be played at the home of the higher seed. This change aims to increase the intensity and excitement of the tournament.
First Round Matchup: Gophers vs. Penn State
The Gophers will travel to Penn State for the first-round matchup, scheduled for Wednesday at 6 pm CT and broadcast on BTN+. Minnesota holds a 1-3 record against the Nittany Lions this season, with their only win a 3-2 victory on November 21st at 3M Arena at Mariucci. However, Penn State dominated the two games played at Pegula Ice Arena in January, winning by a combined score of 10-3.
Gophers’ Season Performance
Minnesota’s season has been marked by inconsistency, resulting in their most losses since the 1997-98 season. Despite this, the team has demonstrated the ability to compete with top-ranked opponents, securing wins against North Dakota, Denver, Michigan, and Ohio State. Their road record stands at 4-10-1.
Potential Semifinal Opponent
If the Gophers manage to upset Penn State, they would likely face the No. 1 seed, Michigan State, in the semifinal round. However, this is contingent on Notre Dame potentially defeating Michigan in their first-round game.
Michigan State Claims Big Ten Title
Michigan State secured its third consecutive Big Ten regular season championship with a 7-1 victory over Minnesota on March 5th, earning them a bye into the semifinals. The Spartans finished the season with a 25-7-1 overall record and a 16-6-1 record in the Big Ten. Michigan State Athletics

Brodie Ziemer, Beckett Hendrickson, and Mason Moe scored for Minnesota in the game. KSTP
