Trump Announces Hospital Ship to Greenland Amidst Healthcare Debate

U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to send a hospital ship to Greenland, citing concerns about healthcare access for residents of the autonomous Danish territory. The announcement has sparked debate, with Danish officials asserting that Greenland’s healthcare system is adequate and questioning the need for external assistance.

Trump’s Rationale and the USNS Mercy

On Saturday, February 22, 2026, Trump stated via his Truth Social platform, “We’re going to send a great floating hospital to Greenland to take care of a lot of people who are sick and not being taken care of there.” He indicated the ship would be used to assist those lacking adequate medical care. The announcement included an illustration of the USNS Mercy, one of two hospital ships operated by the U.S. Navy.

Danish Response and Existing Healthcare System

The offer was met with a swift response from Danish and Greenlandic officials. Greenland’s Prime Minister expressed gratitude but declined the offer, stating on Facebook, “We say – thank you, no.” The Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland has a national healthcare system providing free care to all citizens, a fundamental aspect of their society, contrasting it with the U.S. System where healthcare often incurs costs.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen further reinforced this position, stating that Greenlanders receive the healthcare they need, either within Greenland or through specialized treatment in Denmark.

Recent Medical Evacuation and Prior US-Greenland Interactions

The announcement followed a recent incident where the Danish military evacuated a U.S. Navy crew member from a submarine near Nuuk, Greenland, for urgent medical attention.

This move also comes after Trump, in January 2026, backed down from a previous attempt to gain control of Greenland, settling for a framework agreement aimed at increasing U.S. Influence in the region following discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The details of this agreement remain undisclosed.

Current Status of Hospital Ships

According to naval trackers, both the USNS Mercy and its sister vessel, the USNS Comfort, are currently moored in Mobile, Alabama.
