Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Minister Cleared of Criminal Charges in Private Jet Case

Jakarta, Indonesia – Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar will not face criminal charges related to his utilize of a private jet owned by politician Oesman Sapta Odang (OSO), authorities confirmed on Monday, February 23, 2026. The decision stems from the minister’s prompt reporting of the benefit to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Reporting Within the 30-Day Window

According to Arif Waluyo, Director of Gratification and Public Services at the KPK, Minister Umar reported the use of OSO’s private jet before the 30-day deadline stipulated in Article 12C of Indonesia’s Law on Corruption Eradication (UU Tipikor). DetikNews and Kompas.com both reported on the KPK’s decision.

“He reported it before the 30-day working period, as outlined in Article 12C. This means Article 12B does not apply,” Waluyo stated, referring to the section of the law concerning criminal penalties for accepting gifts or benefits in relation to one’s position.

Gratification and Potential Penalties

Article 12B of the UU Tipikor outlines severe penalties for accepting gratification, including potential life imprisonment or a minimum of four years and a maximum of 20 years in prison, along with substantial fines. However, this article does not apply if the recipient reports the gratification to the KPK within 30 days of receiving it.

KPK’s Next Steps

The KPK now has 30 working days to determine whether the use of the private jet constitutes a gratuity belonging to the minister or to the state. Kompas.com reported that if the jet is deemed state property, Minister Umar will be required to reimburse the KPK for its value, as per KPK regulations.

Minister Umar’s Explanation

Minister Umar previously explained that he used the private jet to travel to Makassar, South Sulawesi, for official duties, citing the lack of available commercial flights at the necessary time. He also stated the need to return quickly to Jakarta for an critical session. Viva.co.id detailed the minister’s reasoning.
