Guterres Demands End to Lebanon-Israel Conflict Amidst Fears of Escalation
Beirut, Lebanon – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urgently called for a cessation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, warning that southern Lebanon risks becoming a “wasteland” and southern Beirut faces potential obliteration. His plea comes after two weeks of escalating conflict triggered by the fallout from the U.S. And Israeli bombing of Iran, and subsequent Hezbollah rocket fire into Israel.
Lebanon ‘Dragged Into’ the Conflict
Speaking in Beirut on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Guterres emphasized that the Lebanese people did not initiate the current conflict. “The Lebanese people did not choose this war. They were dragged into it,” he stated, underscoring the necessitate for a diplomatic solution in line with the UN Charter. He reiterated that there is no military solution to the broader Middle East conflict. UN News
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The conflict has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with over 800,000 people internally displaced in southern Lebanon and areas of southern Beirut, following Israeli evacuation orders covering approximately 14 percent of the country. Guterres expressed his sadness after visiting a shelter and hearing testimonies from displaced individuals. Al Jazeera
Violations of Ceasefire Terms and UNIFIL Concerns
Guterres noted that a cessation of hostilities agreement reached just over a year ago has not prevented continued violence, with both Hezbollah and Israeli forces violating ceasefire terms. He also highlighted the dangers faced by UNIFIL peacekeepers, who have come under fire even as patrolling the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel, deeming attacks against them “completely unacceptable.” UN News
Call for International Support and Disarmament
The UN Secretary-General appealed to the international community to increase support for the Lebanese government and people, and to empower the Lebanese State and Armed Forces. He also reiterated the need for Hezbollah to abide by a Lebanese government decision to establish a “monopoly of arms” and to comply with all relevant Security Council resolutions regarding disarmament. Flash Appeal for Humanitarian Aid

The current conflict began on March 2, 2026, when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel in response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by the U.S. And Israel. A Future Without Fear
“The people of Lebanon – as well as Israel and all other peoples throughout the region – deserve to live without fear, to raise their children without the sound of sirens and strikes. To return home without wondering when they have to flee again,” Guterres concluded, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to working towards a peaceful future for the region. UN News
