Doha’s Facial Recognition Rollout
Hamad International Airport (HIA) has launched a large-scale biometric passenger program, enabling travelers to navigate the terminal from check-in to boarding using facial recognition technology. Developed in collaboration with Qatar Airways and technology partner SITA, the “Fast Pass” system integrates over 700 touchpoints across the Doha-based hub to eliminate the need for physical passports or boarding passes.
Streamlining the Passenger Experience
The system relies on a single registration process, which passengers complete via the Qatar Airways mobile app, self-service kiosks, or assisted check-in desks. According to SITA, once a passenger registers, their face is linked to a digital travel identity. This allows the traveler to drop bags, clear security, and board aircraft by simply looking at a camera.

The infrastructure is designed to prioritize data security while keeping passengers in control of their personal information. The airport reports that the registration process takes seconds, and the technology is currently being deployed to streamline the passenger flow as the facility handles a number of travelers never seen before.
IATA Backing for Digital IDs
The implementation at Hamad International Airport responds to a global shift in aviation travel patterns. According to research from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a majority of passengers now prefer biometric identification over traditional physical documentation. By verifying a passenger’s identity once, the airport can process travelers through multiple touchpoints without the need for repetitive document checks.
Selim Bouri, SITA’s President for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, stated that the transition to digital identity is central to how people move through airports today. Bouri noted that the HIA project serves as a model for the aviation industry, proving that biometric systems can function at scale to create a more fluid, “paperless” travel experience.
Optional Service and Future Growth
While the system is currently active for participating passengers, it remains an optional service. HIA maintains staff on-site to assist travelers who prefer traditional manual check-in and boarding procedures.
The airport plans to expand the service in the future. Future updates will include:
- Connecting Flights: The system will soon be available for Qatar Airways transit passengers to simplify transfers.
- Broader Access: HIA is working to include other airlines operating out of the terminal.
- Off-site Integration: The airport intends to eventually allow passengers to complete enrollment and verification procedures outside of the terminal environment.
Leadership Changes at Qatar Airways
This technological rollout follows recent leadership transitions at the airport’s primary carrier. The Qatar Airways Group officially named Hamad Ali Al-Khater as the new Group Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, with the appointment taking effect from Sunday, December 7, 2025.
