Hanford Volleyball Hosts Youth Camp to Foster Skill Development and Community Engagement
Hanford High School’s varsity volleyball team is set to host its annual youth volleyball camp from July 15–18 at the school’s indoor gym, according to a press release from the Hanford Athletic Department. The event, designed for athletes aged 10–16, aims to provide foundational training in volleyball techniques, teamwork, and sportsmanship, with sessions led by current players and coaching staff.
The camp’s curriculum includes drills on serve reception, passing, and offensive strategies, alongside scrimmages to simulate real-game scenarios. Participants will also receive guidance on injury prevention and nutrition, as highlighted by head coach Maria Lopez. “We want to ensure young athletes leave not only with better skills but also a deeper understanding of what it takes to compete at a higher level,” Lopez said in the release.
Registration for the camp is open through the Hanford School District’s website, with fees set at $150 per participant. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available, funded by local sports foundations. The event marks the second consecutive year the team has expanded its outreach beyond school teams, partnering with three community centers to recruit attendees from underserved areas.
According to data from the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in youth sports programs like this one has grown by 12% since 2020, with 68% of parents citing skill development as a primary benefit. Hanford’s camp aligns with this trend, offering a structured environment for early skill acquisition.

Local athletes have already begun expressing interest in the event. “I’ve been playing volleyball for two years, and I think this camp will help me improve my game before the next season,” said 13-year-old participant Ethan Carter, a seventh-grader at Hanford Middle School.
The camp’s timing coincides with a broader push by the Hanford School District to strengthen its extracurricular offerings. In 2023, the district allocated an additional $200,000 to sports programs, emphasizing accessibility and youth development.
What Makes This Camp Unique?
Unlike many youth sports camps that focus solely on physical training, Hanford’s program integrates mentorship components, with high school players serving as role models. “We’re not just teaching volleyball—we’re building confidence and leadership,” said senior team captain Jamal Rivera, who will co-lead sessions.
The camp also includes a “Parent Education Workshop” on July 14, covering topics such as balancing academics with athletics and recognizing signs of overtraining. This addition reflects a growing emphasis on holistic athlete development, a trend noted in a 2022 study by the American College of Sports Medicine.
How to Participate
Interested athletes can register via the Hanford School District’s official portal, with priority given to residents of the Hanford Unified School District. The deadline to apply is July 1. For those unable to attend in person, the team is exploring a virtual component for 2024, pending funding.
“Our goal is to make this camp a cornerstone of local sports culture,” said Lopez. “We hope to see new faces every year, whether they’re seasoned players or just starting out.”
