Haptic: Revolutionizing Navigation with Touch
Smartphones and GPS apps have become essential tools for navigating our world. But for individuals with blindness or low vision, these traditional methods can pose significant challenges. Haptic, a company dedicated to creating a more inclusive experience, is introducing a revolutionary approach using touch – a universal language understood by everyone.
From Concept to Platform: A Journey of Innovation
Haptic’s journey began in 2017 when a group of colleagues, inspired by a friend who lost their sight in an accident, set out to develop a way to navigate without relying on visual or auditory cues. Recognizing the limitations of screen readers and spoken directions, they embraced touch as a more intuitive and accessible alternative.
“Why not receive information in a more robust, intuitive, and accessible way? Everyone can understand the sensation of touch. It’s global, worldwide, it’s universal,” said Enzo Caruso, co-founder and head of business at Haptic.
Introducing the Haptic Corridor
Haptic has developed a patented technology that uses vibrations and tactile sensations to guide users in the right direction. They call it the “haptic corridor.” Your device pulses steadily when you’re on track, intensifying or quickening if you veer off course. This simple yet powerful approach, according to Haptic, is intuitive enough to learn within seconds.
The haptic corridor can guide users in various environments, from bustling city streets and open landscapes to even inside buildings (a feature currently in development).
Expanding Reach Through Partnerships
Initially, Haptic relied on a dedicated wearable device. However, recognizing the potential of existing smartwatches, they shifted their focus to software integration. Their platform now leverages the capabilities of popular smartwatches and phones, opening up a world of possibilities for wider adoption.
“Technology advances while you’re advancing — and smartwatches got better. So, do you want to be in competition with the Googles and Apples out there… or do you want to have them as allies? You can take your SDK from thousands of users to billions of users,” Caruso stated.
Haptic’s vision extends beyond accessibility, incorporating the potential for broader applications. Imagine navigating your way to an Uber pickup without even taking your phone out, or easily finding your way through a crowded venue. The possibilities are truly limitless.
“This, and not monetizing our own app, is how we intend to make money, Yoo emphasized: “We have a free app available to the world, live in 31 countries right now… and we have the licensing and integration model — that’s the business.”
A Powerful Future
Haptic is actively seeking partnerships with companies like Uber, Google, and telecoms to further expand its reach and integrate haptic navigation into everyday life. They are currently in the midst of a funding round to fuel this growth and bring their vision to fruition.
