From Addiction to Inspiration: Free Surf Lessons in Hawaii Offer Healing and Hope

Honolulu, Hawaii – Buddy Wiggins, a 32-year-old pool cleaner from Honolulu, is offering free surf lessons to strangers on Waikiki Beach as a way to overcome his years-long struggle with sports gambling addiction. What began as a desperate attempt to find a new direction in life has blossomed into the First Wave Project, bringing joy and a sense of empowerment to both students and instructor.

Battling Addiction and Finding a New Calling

Wiggins recounted a moment of crisis, stating, “I finally came to a point where I lost pretty much everything,” and described feeling overwhelmed with despair. CBS News reports that it was during this low point that Wiggins felt a compelling urge to share his passion for surfing with others.

The First Wave Project: Spreading Inspiration on Waikiki Beach

The First Wave Project operates twice a week, with Wiggins and a small group of friends offering free surf lessons to those who have never tried the sport. Beat of Hawaii notes that a typical surf lesson in Waikiki can cost around $200, making the First Wave Project’s offer particularly impactful.

Students have described the experience as transformative. Quest Douglass shared, “The energy that they had made you sense like you could do exactly what he was saying,” while Manny Fernandez said the lessons gave him “a confidence that I haven’t had since I was in my 30s.” Wiggins believes that overcoming challenges, like learning to surf, can inspire individuals to pursue other goals, reflecting, “I reckon when you overcome things that you never thought was possible, you start thinking, ‘OK, what’s next?’”

A Grassroots Effort with Growing Impact

In just two months, the First Wave Project has helped approximately 50 people experience the thrill of riding a wave. The project has as well gained significant attention online, amassing around 6,000 followers on Instagram and reaching over a million views with its video clips. Professional surfers, including Kai Lenny, Mason Ho, and Kelia Moniz, have publicly voiced their support for the initiative.

Finding Healing Through Giving Back

Despite facing financial challenges, Wiggins offers the lessons entirely for free, finding fulfillment in the act of giving back. He explained that sharing his passion provides him with a sense of purpose and helps him navigate his own recovery. The project is a testament to the power of community and the healing potential of the ocean.
