Helena Utility Board Proposes Rate Increase

One of the primary reasons given for the adjustment proposal is that rates have not remained consistent with rising costs of operations over the years.

Nelson explained how the rate adjustment would allow the board to complete projects that have been put off and ensure stability for years to come.

“It’ll allow us the opportunity to take care of a lot of things that have been deferred for the past 25 years,” Nelson said. “It’ll create a lot of stability for our system, for the ratepayers and it just makes everything overall a lot easier to deal with. It’s a lot better to address things on our terms than it is for the expense and everything that comes from emergency repairs. I think overall, it would be really good.”

Some of the projects that will be completed as a result of the rate adjustment include replacement of aging water and sewer mains, upgrades of lift stations and improvements to continue to meet regulatory compliance.

After the presentation was complete, board members and residents in attendance had the opportunity to ask Nelson and Tidmore questions about what was discussed.

The board will reconvene at City Hall to vote on the potential rate adjustment on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. If the adjustment is approved, notices will be attached to the bills that go out in March, and the change will go into effect in April.
