Mount Congreve Gardens Celebrates Herman Dool’s Legacy with New Exhibition
Mount Congreve Gardens has officially opened an exhibition honoring Herman Dool, the garden director who, alongside Ambrose Congreve, transformed the space into one of the world’s premier gardens. The opening, held on Thursday, March 13, 2026, coincided with the peak bloom of the garden’s renowned magnolias.
A Legacy in Horticulture
Herman Dool served as Garden Director at Mount Congreve for nearly 40 years, beginning in the early 1960s. His collaborative work with Ambrose Congreve led to the gardens being hailed by the Horticultural Society of Massachusetts as “One of the Great Gardens of the World.” Dool’s planting philosophy centered around mass plantings – never using fewer than 25 plants of a single variety – believing this approach created the most impactful visual statement as the garden matured.
The Herman Dool Exhibition: A Look into His Life and Work
The exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into Dool’s life and legacy through a collection of artifacts. These include early photographs from his native Boskoop, Netherlands, personal diaries detailing his work at Mount Congreve, educational certificates, and his everyday tools, such as his grafting knives. Significant documents, including correspondence from 1960 and his 1961 work diary, along with a handwritten note from Marjorie Congreve, are as well on display.
Magnolias in Bloom
The exhibition’s opening perfectly timed with the spectacular bloom of the magnolias along the Herman Dool Walk. This walk features a canopy of blossoms from over 250 magnolia trees, creating a display unmatched outside of Asia. March and April are considered the prime months to experience the magnolias and the exhibition.
Recognition and Partnerships
The exhibition was officially opened by Her Excellency Maaike van Koldam, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ireland. Ambassador van Koldam has served as the Dutch ambassador to Ireland since 2023. Herman Dool himself was knighted by the Dutch Royal Family for his contributions to horticulture.
A Testament to Collaboration
Sara Dolan, CEO of Mount Congreve Gardens, emphasized the importance of the partnership between Dool and Congreve. “The Herman Dool Exhibition is a celebration of not just a remarkable man, but the extraordinary partnership between Herman and Ambrose. Their combined efforts have left an indelible mark on horticulture, and we are thrilled to honour this legacy.” Elmer Dool, Herman’s son, who was present at the opening, added, “To see my father’s commitment to beauty and nature recognised in such a stunning environment is profoundly moving. The legacy he built with Ambrose Congreve is a gift to all who visit.”
Mount Congreve Gardens is open seven days a week, inviting visitors to experience its beauty, history, and the enduring passion of Herman Dool and Ambrose Congreve.
