“High Potential” Adds Steve Howey as Series Regular for Season Two, Kaitlin Olson Takes on Executive Producer Role
High Potential is bolstering its cast for the upcoming second season. Steve Howey, known for his role in Shameless, will join the ABC crime drama as a new series regular. Together, star kaitlin Olson is expanding her role behind the scenes, being promoted to executive producer.
The series, a breakout hit of the 2024-25 television season, centers on Morgan (Olson), a uniquely gifted single mother. Her remarkable ability to solve crimes leads to an unlikely but effective partnership with a dedicated, seasoned LAPD detective (Daniel Sunjata).
Howey will portray Captain Jesse Wagner, the precinct’s new commanding officer. Wagner is a politically astute and charismatic leader, equally comfortable navigating high-society fundraisers and embracing unconventional approaches to law enforcement. Like Morgan, he’s a forward-thinker who isn’t afraid to insert himself directly into unfolding situations.
Joining Olson, Sunjata, and Howey as series regulars are Javicia Leslie as Daphne, Deniz Akdeniz as Lev “Oz” ozdil, Judy Reyes as Selena, and Amirah J and Matthew lamb as Morgan’s children, Ava and Elliot.
Created by Drew Goddard, high Potential is based on the French series HPI. The show topped the ratings charts as the No. 1 broadcast series of the 2024-25 season among adults 18-49 and ranked second in total multi-platform viewers. Todd Harthan serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Goddard, Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles, Olson, and Marc Halsey, who has been promoted from co-executive producer.
High Potential will return this fall on ABC, airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET and streaming next day on Hulu. The show’s blend of crime-solving and humor is further enhanced by howey’s comedic background, aligning him with co-stars Olson (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) and Reyes (scrubs).
howey is widely recognized for his long-running portrayal of Kevin Ball on the Showtime series Shameless. He also previously held a series regular role on the WB comedy Reba and recently starred in the CBS action series True Lies, executive produced by James cameron and McG. He is represented by Independent Artist Group.
