India Makes Strides in Tuberculosis Control: Global Report Highlights Success
India is celebrating a victory in its battle against tuberculosis (TB) as a recent Global TB Report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights significant progress. The country has achieved remarkable success in increasing treatment coverage and preventative therapy uptake, marking a crucial step towards ending TB.
**Expanding Preventative Treatment Access**
A major focus of India’s TB control strategy has been expanding access to preventative therapy. This treatment, crucial for individuals at high risk of contracting TB, includes household contacts of TB patients and people living with HIV. These individuals receive daily doses of Isoniazid, a widely used TB preventive medication, for 6-9 months. Data from the Global TB Report reveals a positive trend: 12.2 lakh people were enrolled in preventative therapy in 2023, a substantial increase from 10.2 lakh in 2022 and 4.2 lakh in 2021.
**High Treatment Coverage Saves Lives**
India has also achieved a commendable treatment coverage rate of 85%, placing it among seven of the 30 high-burden countries with high treatment coverage. This achievement is particularly significant considering TB’s status as the leading infectious killer globally, claiming the lives of nearly half of those infected without treatment.
Providing free medicines for TB treatment, a vital aspect of India’s strategy, addresses financial barriers. Treatment, which can span up to two years, often leads to lost income due to patients’ inability to work.
**Combatting Drug-Resistant TB**
India’s commitment to combating drug-resistant TB is evident in its treatment success rates. The data reveals successful treatment outcomes in 89% of cases involving drug-susceptible TB, 73% of those with rifampicin-resistant TB, and 69% of cases involving extremely drug-resistant TB. Addressing challenges related to medication adherence, the government has implemented innovative solutions such as pill boxes with reminders and shorter treatment courses.
**Continuing the Fight Against TB**
India’s progress in tackling TB is a testament to its dedication and commitment. However, continued efforts are essential to further reduce the burden of TB. Investing in research, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and raising awareness remain crucial aspects of this ongoing battle.
