pretty new: MOS (Modular Operating System) is a modern, lightweight open source server OS, which is specifically developed for home labs, self-hosting and small server environments. It combines many functions that you would otherwise find on different ones Tools distributed, in one central surface. That it is lightweight and resource-saving – and beyond consistently modular is, that’s what makes it so attractive.

Dear Winboard community,

First of all: Bobby Borisov recently wrote about the project on Linuxiac.com and drew attention to it. (cf. MOS Is a New Open-Source Server OS Aimed at Homelabs and Self-Hosting ) – and indeed, this seems to be a very interesting and promising development. A look at the developer’s page is enlightening: A lot is made clear directly on the project page itself – everything translated into German.) So here are some DATA about this system – see the whole thing here: MOS ) for you….

…MOS – the modular operating system for servers and home labs is still a very young project: it is Devuan-based and extremely resource-saving – offers the following services: Web UI with monitoring, storage & shares, users, network, notifications, web terminal as well as Docker/LXC/VMs – all modularly expandable.

🔹 Basis: Devuan-based OS (Debian fork without systemd)
🔹 License: Open Source – GNU AGPLv3

🖥️ Web-based management: MOS offers a modern, clear web UI for the entire system administration – dashboard, monitoring, services and more.

A look at the dashboard

How the MOS project is structured: a quick overview of the features: (see the project page here: MOS ):
📊 Monitoring & Systemstatus
CPU, RAM, disks, temperatures and network status at a glance
Real-time notifications about important events
💾 Storage & user management
Manage storage pools and file systems
Shares (SMB/NFS) ● Control users & rights centrally
🐳 Containers & Virtualization

  • Docker
  • LXC-Container
  • VMs
  • Everything visible and manageable directly via the UI (depending on the activated services).

📌 Special features & status
✨ Lightweight & resource-saving – Seen in this way, Mos is very, very suitable for home labs without a lot of overhead.
✨ Built modularly – the UI is well divided – it only shows active modules – consistent modularization and very well thought out!
✨ Beta status / active project – as already mentioned above – this is still a very young project, but nevertheless it can already be used productively, at least according to community feedback.

some typical use cases: From home servers to small racks – MOS adapts flexibly to the needs

the. Homeserver/NAS

  • Quickly check resources and storage pools
  • Keep an eye on shares and users
  • Manage remote mounts and hub services

b. Dev / Lab

  • Docker, LXC and VMs in one place
  • Web terminal for quick checks
  • Plugins for project-specific tasks

What’s special about it:
Keep an eye on shares/users,
Remote mounts and hub services, terminal for quick checks
Plugins for project-specific tasks…
