Laegreid Secures Victory in Kontiolahti Mass Start; Czech Biathletes Hornig and Krčmář Compete
Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid claimed victory in the men’s mass start race in Kontiolahti, Finland, on March 8, 2026. Vítězslav Hornig of the Czech Republic finished 16th, although his teammate Michal Krčmář placed 24th.
Lægreid’s Flawless Performance
Lægreid completed the 15km course in 34 minutes and 39.7 seconds with zero penalties, securing his first World Cup win of the season. He finished 16.5 seconds ahead of France’s Éric Perrot, who had one penalty. Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen of Norway rounded out the podium, finishing 24.1 seconds behind Lægreid, also with one penalty. Sport.cz reports that Perrot has secured a small globe for his performance in the discipline.
Hornig’s Strong Showing After Illness
Vítězslav Hornig, returning to competition after recovering from a virus, delivered a solid performance, finishing 16th with a time 1 minute and 20.4 seconds behind Lægreid. Despite not being at his peak physical condition, Hornig’s perfect shooting compensated for a slower running time, which was the 20th fastest of the field. Czech Radio noted that Hornig had delayed travel to Kontiolahti due to the illness and did not participate in previous races or the Saturday relay.
Krčmář’s Struggles and Future Plans
Michal Krčmář faced a more challenging race, incurring four penalty rounds and finishing 24th, 2 minutes and 47.4 seconds behind the winner. Despite the disappointing result, Krčmář confirmed his commitment to continue biathlon in the next season. EuropeSays reports that Krčmář made the decision after discussing it with his family, acknowledging the difficulties of being separated from his children, Viktor and Tamara, due to the demands of the sport. He has agreed with his team on a training plan that will allow him to spend more time at home during the spring and summer, with the family joining him for at least a week during training camps.
