Houston Police Release Footage of Shooting Leaving sergeant and Suspect Wounded
HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department has released footage detailing a shooting incident that left a Houston police sergeant and a suspect injured, according to reports.Officers were dispatched to Mykawa road around 11:30 p.m. on July 17 following reports of an individual with a weapon.Dash camera video released on Aug. 15 depicts officers approaching the suspect in their vehicles, using spotlights to illuminate him as he walked along the roadway. Maintaining a safe distance, officers exited their vehicles and instructed the suspect to raise his hands. Gunfire was exchanged after the second command, resulting in Sgt. P.George being struck. Despite his injury, George, along with Sgt. K. Burch, returned fire, hitting the suspect.
Sgt. Burch promptly requested medical assistance for both George and the suspect, and then assisted in applying a tourniquet to George’s leg.
Further bodycam footage shows officers approaching the suspect with a shield, securing his firearm, and handcuffing him before administering first aid.
Both the wounded officer and the suspect survived the shooting. Sgt. George was reported to be “up and moving” after being hit, and the suspect was transported for treatment before being charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.Sgt.Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada were fatally shot before backup arrived; after the officers were shot, bystanders persuaded the man to put down his weapon.
