Bohumil Hrabal’s Cottage in Kersko Declared a Cultural Monument

The cottage in Kersko, once home to celebrated Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, has been officially designated a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture. The decision, made on the recommendation of the Central Bohemian Region, recognizes the site’s significant cultural and historical value. The property is currently managed by the Polabské Museum.

A Testament to Hrabal’s Life and Work

According to Václav Švenda, a regional councilor for culture, Hrabal’s cottage is a “unique testimony to the life and work of a world-renowned writer.” The location is deeply intertwined with Hrabal’s literary creations and serves as a tangible link to the settings and themes explored in his novels and stories. The designation as a cultural monument aims to ensure the preservation of this important site for future generations. Seznam Zprávy reports the Central Bohemian Region initially requested the cultural monument status last year.

History of the Cottage

Hrabal acquired the cottage in 1965 and undertook significant renovations between 1967 and 1970, adding an upper floor and a garage with a glass veranda. He penned much of his acclaimed work within its walls, particularly during the 1970s. Prior to his death, Hrabal gifted the property to his neighbor’s son, who subsequently added a bathroom and kitchen.

Recent Restoration and Public Access

The Central Bohemian Region purchased the cottage in 2021 for nearly ten million Czech crowns. Following a comprehensive reconstruction, it reopened to the public in May 2024 as a “house museum,” managed by the Polabské Museum. iDNES.cz reports the restoration returned the cottage to its appearance from the 1980s, when Hrabal resided there.

The museum features original furnishings from the Polabské Museum’s collections, supplemented by period pieces donated by individuals. Visitors can explore the cottage from Friday to Sunday in April and October, and daily from May to September (excluding Mondays). Tickets can be purchased through the Polabské Museum’s booking website.
