Huawei’s Bold Fold: Can the Mate XT Crack the Folding Phone Market?
Huawei’s gamble on triple-folding technology has reached the international stage. The Mate XT, a device initially launched in China in September 2024, has made its debut in Malaysia, showcasing Chinese innovation in a market increasingly dominated by South Korean giants. This move comes amidst ongoing trade tensions with the United States, highlighting Huawei’s determination to remain a key player in the global tech landscape.
The Mate XT boasts an impressive 10.2-inch screen when fully extended, rivaling an iPad in size. Its ultra-slim profile of 3.6 millimeters is a feather in its cap, but questions linger about durability and usability in real-world scenarios. Priced at a hefty €3,499 (approx. Rp59 million), it targets a niche market of early adopters rather than mainstream consumers.
While impressive in design and technological advancement, the Mate XT faces several hurdles. High costs, durability concerns, ongoing supply chain issues, and limited software optimization for its unique form factor could stifle widespread adoption.
Huawei is currently the sole company offering a triple-folding smartphone, as acknowledged by Bryan MA, Vice President of Device Research at IDC Market Intelligence. This technological edge is undeniable, but the lack of access to Google’s chips and services remains a significant handicap.
Despite the challenges, the global market for folding smartphones shows immense promise. IDC forecasts sales to jump to 45.7 million units by 2028, up from approximately 20 million units last year. This growth anticipates an influx of new players, including a rumored folding iPhone from Apple.
While Apple has yet to officially enter the fray, analysts predict their entry could significantly accelerate market growth. "When Apple enters the [folding phone] market, it is indeed expected to significantly influence the industry’s expansion," stated Riby Lu, an analyst at TrendForce.
The Huawei Mate XT makes a bold statement about the future of foldable technology. Whether it will conquer the market remains to be seen, but its entrance undoubtedly adds another layer of intrigue to a rapidly evolving industry.
