Free Hot Water for Hundreds of Offaly Homes Thanks to Renewable Energy

Residents in Co. Offaly are set to enjoy the benefits of free hot water powered by clean, renewable energy. A groundbreaking collaboration between EnergyCloud, a social enterprise, Amazon Web Services, and Offaly County Council will provide 300 families living in social housing with surplus renewable electricity to heat their water cylinders.

Utilizing Surplus Energy for Efficiency

The initiative aims to address the issue of surplus renewable energy, which is often wasted due to limited storage capacity. Smart devices installed in the participating homes will capture unused wind energy generated at night, diverting it to heat domestic water cylinders. Residents will receive text message alerts notifying them of available free power, allowing them to take advantage of the opportunity to heat their water while they sleep.

Government Support for Renewable Energy Adoption

Speaking at the launch in Tullamore, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence. “The Government has clear ambitions under the Climate Action Plan to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and utilize renewable energy as efficiently as possible,” he said.

The project highlights the significant potential of renewable energy with estimates suggesting that €83 million worth of wind energy was dispatched down in the last three weeks alone.

A Win-Win for Environment and Community

“This is a win-win-win as we are collectively creating solutions for surplus energy rather than simply switching off wind turbines and solar panels,” stated CEO of EnergyCloud Alan Wyley.

This innovative project marks a significant step towards a sustainable future, demonstrating the effective utilization of renewable resources for the benefit of local communities and the environment.
