Hungary Moves to Seize Ukrainian Bank Assets Amidst Rising Tensions

Budapest – Hungarian lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the continued seizure of funds and valuables belonging to Ukraine’s Oschadbank, a move escalating tensions between the two nations. The proposal, submitted by Máté Kocsis, a leader of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, seeks to keep the assets frozen pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

Details of the Seizure and Proposed Legislation

The case centers around a “significant amount” of cash and gold that was being transported through Hungary. According to the bill, the assets, seized last week, should be considered confiscated until the investigation initiated by the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is complete. Kocsis has stated that the method of transportation and the identities of those involved raise concerns about Hungary’s national security. Magyar Nemzet reported on the details of the proposal.

Political Reactions and Concerns

The swiftness of the proposal has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Zsolt Molnar, a member of the MSZP party, questioned the timing of the bill, suggesting it was introduced ahead of upcoming elections. Zoltan Szasz, head of the Jobbik committee, voiced concerns about the lack of time to thoroughly review the legislation, also raising the issue of retroactive legislation. Despite these objections, both parties acknowledged the potential national security implications.

Kocsis addressed concerns about retroactive effects, stating the proposal specifically addresses this issue. He also apologized for the short notice, explaining that parliamentary sessions were limited before the election, necessitating a quick decision. The committee ultimately voted four in favor, with two abstentions from Szasz and Molnar.

Background of the Incident

Seven Ukrainian citizens were detained along with the valuables last week but have since been released and returned to Ukraine. Oschadbank and the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs have demanded the return of the seized assets and vehicles. This incident has further strained relations between Ukraine and Hungary, particularly in the context of ongoing regional conflicts and political maneuvering.
