Retailers Demand Action Against “Relentless Violence” in Stores
Retailers across Ireland are reaching their breaking point due to a surge in violent crime, demanding urgent action from authorities to protect their businesses and employees. Shop owners gathered at Fallon & Byrne in Dublin this week for the launch of a new campaign titled , aiming to address this growing national crisis.
Alarming Statistics Highlight the Severity of the Problem
Spearheaded by ShelfLife in partnership with the Convenience Stores & Newsagents Association, the initiative sheds light on the alarming rise in criminal activity plaguing retailers. A recent ShelfLife survey revealed that 100% of retailers surveyed experienced some form of crime in the past year, ranging from shoplifting and robbery to employee theft and gang intimidation. A staggering 89% reported an escalation in retail crime, with 67% expressing dissatisfaction with Garda response times.
Personal Stories Reveal the Human Cost of Retail Crime
The launch event, attended by over 100 retailers, featured poignant testimonies from business owners about the impact of crime on their lives and livelihoods. John Caulwell, owner of Spar on O’Connell Street in Dublin, shared his harrowing experience of being held at knifepoint during a robbery, where a syringe was held to his neck. The perpetrator received a six-month sentence. More recently, a staff member at his store had a gun pointed at his head, a chilling incident caught on CCTV.
Call for Enhanced Protection and Faster Response Times
“It’s all on CCTV. We know who the guy is but he was wearing a balaclava and a hoody so there wasn’t enough evidence to bring to the DPP,” Caulwell lamented.
He offered his employee counselling after the traumatic experience. Caulwell emphasizes the mental toll of such attacks, stating, “I would challenge any Garda or politician to spend a day in my shop. Only then will they see what this is really like.”
Caulwell’s call for action reflects the desperate plea of many retailers who are exhausted by the ongoing struggle for justice and safety. He urges for increased Garda presence on the streets, stronger legislative protections, and faster response times to combat the escalating tide of violence in retail spaces.
