Icy Roads Expected Across Central Sweden – Travel Advisory

Large parts of Sweden are bracing for icy road conditions on Thursday, with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issuing several warnings for sudden ice slippage. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Slippery Conditions Forecast
The rise in temperatures is creating conditions ripe for black ice. As snowfall transitions to rain and freezing rain, a rapid formation of ice is expected on roadways.
SMHI Warnings in Effect
SMHI has issued three yellow warnings covering a significant portion of central Sweden:
- First Warning: Valid until 10:00 AM, extending from the Norwegian border to the Stockholm area.
- Second Warning: Applies to parts of northern Svealand and Gävleborg county, expiring at 3:00 PM.
- Third Warning: Starts at 10:00 AM and lasts until 10:00 PM for parts of northwestern Svealand and southern Norrland.
Travel Recommendations
Road users in the affected areas are urged to drive carefully and adjust their speed to the prevailing road conditions. SMHI recommends allowing extra time for journeys. There is also a potential for delays and cancellations in public transport due to the hazardous conditions.
“Adjust your speed to the road conditions. Allow more time for your journey,” writes SMHI.
