Sweden Dominates Kazakhstan 8-1 in World Junior Championship Opener

Sweden kicked off their 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship campaign with a resounding 8-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Friday night. Coach Magnus Havelid’s squad showcased their offensive firepower, scoring five goals in the opening period alone, securing their spot atop Group B with a perfect 2-0 record.

Kazakhstan, returning to the elite division after a hiatus, faced a tough welcome back. Outshot 52-16, the Central Asian nation struggled to contain Sweden’s relentless attack. Anton Wahlberg led the Swedish charge with four points, highlighting the team’s balanced scoring threat. More than half of Sweden’s skaters registered at least one point, demonstrating their clinical efficiency.

“It was a good game. I think it’s a little bit harder to get focused or motivated for this type of game, but it’s really good. I think we played a good 45 minutes. I think in the third period it was a bit too sloppy, too many turnovers, but overall, a well-executed game,” commented Wahlberg.

Victor Eklund, a highly touted prospect projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, opened the scoring with his first World Junior goal. Deflecting Tom Willander’s shot past goalie Vladimir Nikitin, Eklund’s goal ignited Sweden’s offensive onslaught.

“It’s amazing. I just tried to go to the net and then got the tip,” Eklund shared.

Sweden continued to pile on the pressure, scoring three goals in a span of four minutes. David Edstrom, Linus Eriksson, and Felix Nilsson extended Sweden’s lead, leaving Kazakhstan reeling. Zeb Forsfjall capped off the dominant first period with a goal assisted by Wahlberg, giving Sweden a commanding 5-0 advantage.

While Sweden eased off the gas pedal in the second period, they continued to control the game. Wahlberg added another goal on a power play, extending Sweden’s lead to 6-1. Kazakhstan managed to break through Sweden’s shutout bid late in the second period, with Artur Gross scoring on a rebound.

Oscar Vuollet and David Granberg added goals in the third period, sealing Sweden’s decisive victory. Looking ahead to their next matchup against Switzerland, Wahlberg acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We usually have hard games against them, especially last year in the quarter-finals. So we know what to expect.”

Sweden’s dominance over Kazakhstan extends beyond this single game. Their winning streak against Kazakhstan spans eight consecutive games, dating back to 1998, with an aggregate score of 67-14. This historic rivalry further highlights Sweden’s consistent strength and dominance in international junior hockey.
