Apple Expands Child Safety Features with New Nudity Reporting Tool

Apple is taking another step to protect children online by introducing a new feature that allows kids to report images or videos containing nudity directly to the company. This expansion of Apple’s existing Communication Safety feature will give parents and children an additional layer of safety within the iMessage platform.

How the New Feature Works

Currently, Apple’s Communication Safety feature uses on-device scanning to detect nudity in photos and videos sent through Messages, AirDrop, or Contact Poster. These images are then blurred, and users are presented with options to message an adult, access helpful resources, or block the sender.

The new feature builds upon this by allowing users to send a report to Apple containing the potentially harmful content, along with associated messages and contact information. This detailed report will enable Apple to thoroughly assess the situation and take appropriate action.

Apple’s Response to Reports

Upon receiving a report, Apple will review the images, videos, and accompanying messages. Based on their assessment, they may choose to take several actions, including:

  • Preventing the user from sending iMessages
  • Reporting the incident to law enforcement

Global Rollout and Availability

The new child safety feature is currently undergoing testing in Australia with iOS 18.2. While Apple plans to make it available globally, a specific launch date has not yet been announced.

A Commitment to Child Safety

This latest development reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer online environment for children. While the company faced criticism and revised its plans for scanning iCloud Photos for child sexual abuse material in the past, their dedication to protecting young users remains evident.
