Indian Entrepreneur Exits Sweden, Citing Hostile Immigration System
An Indian entrepreneur, Abhijith Nag Balasubramanya, has sold his Swedish microgreens company, Hydro Space Sweden AB, and returned to India, attributing his departure to a “hostile” and “dysfunctional” immigration system. His experience highlights growing concerns about Sweden’s environment for international founders amid tightening citizenship policies.
The Rise and Fall of Hydro Space Sweden AB
Abhijith Nag Balasubramanya founded Hydro Space Sweden AB in May 2025 in Skellefteå, Sweden. The company quickly gained traction, focusing on strengthening local food security in northern Sweden and creating jobs for local residents. The initial harvest was well-received by customers.
Forced Exit and Accusations Against Migrationsverket
Despite the company’s success, Balasubramanya was forced to sell the business and leave the country by the finish of February 2026. He publicly stated that this was not a voluntary exit but an “eviction” orchestrated by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). In a LinkedIn post, he described his experience as a “masterclass in systemic dysfunction and unprofessionalism.”
Balasubramanya alleges that case officers at Migrationsverket lacked a basic understanding of business and failed to provide clear guidance on documentation, despite repeated requests. He further accused the agency of employing a “moving goalpost strategy,” changing the reasons for rejection throughout the process. He also criticized a systemic hostility towards international talent.
Concerns of Xenophobia and a Changing Climate
Balasubramanya characterized the Swedish immigration system as “fundamentally broken and seemingly xenophobic.” He believes the current political climate has fostered a culture within the migration offices that views international talent with contempt rather than recognizing their value to the economy.
Impact on Mental Health and Future Plans
The entrepreneur stated that the ordeal significantly impacted his mental health, leading him to prioritize recovery and return to India. He emphasized that his commitment to sustainability and entrepreneurship remains unchanged. He chose not to pursue a lengthy legal battle due to the financial and emotional toll.
Warning to International Founders and Investors
Balasubramanya issued a warning to other international founders and investors, suggesting that Sweden’s reputation as a startup-friendly destination does not align with the reality faced by foreign talent navigating the immigration system. He expressed pride in the achievements of Hydro Space Sweden AB but lamented being unable to oversee its continued growth under new ownership.
