Trump-Linked Indonesian Resort Project Halted Amid Environmental Concerns

Indonesian authorities have temporarily suspended a large-scale tourism development project linked to former US President Donald Trump over serious ecological concerns. The project, known as Lido City, spans 3,000 hectares near Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park and was a joint venture between MNC Land, an Indonesian company, and Trump’s organization.

The Environment and Forestry Ministry announced the halt, citing inadequate rainwater management practices at the resort. This has led to sedimentation in Lido Lake, drastically reducing its size and threatening its delicate ecosystem.

“The mismatch between environmental plans and their actual implementation is a major concern in our efforts to preserve natural resources,” stated Ardyanto Nugroho, director of environmental complaints at the Ministry. Laboratory tests are currently underway to assess the full extent of the environmental damage and determine potential penalties.

The project, which has been in development since 2014, envisioned high-end resorts, golf courses, and country clubs. Billionaire and Indonesian politician Hary Tanoesoedibjo, known as Tanoe, spearheaded the development and touted the project’s potential to create a new tourist destination rivaling Bali, with an estimated cost of up to $3 billion.

However, environmentalists have long voiced their concerns regarding the project’s potential impact on Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, a vital habitat for endangered species like the Javan slow loris.

The Indonesian government’s decision to halt construction signals a potentially significant shift in its approach to environmental protection, prioritizing sustainability over rapid development.

"It’s time for the business sector to prioritize sustainable practices that consider the environment and communities," emphasized Meizani Irmadhiany, executive chair of Konservasi Indonesia.

The halting of the Trump-linked development project serves as a crucial turning point for Indonesia, highlighting the delicate balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility. Moving forward, the Indonesian government must prioritize transparency, community engagement, and rigorous environmental impact assessments for all future projects.
