Indonesia’s Population Reaches 288.32 Million at Complete of 2025
As of December 31, 2025, Indonesia’s population has reached 288,315,089 people, marking an increase of approximately 1.6 million compared to the data from June 30, 2025, according to the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Population Breakdown
The population is comprised of 145,498,082 males and 142,816,997 females, indicating a slight male dominance. Java Island remains the most populous region, housing 55.81 percent of the total Indonesian population. Sumatra Island follows with 21.88 percent.
Religious Composition
Islam is the predominant religion in Indonesia, practiced by 87.15 percent of the population. Other religious groups include Christians (7.37 percent), Catholics (3.07 percent), Hindus (1.66 percent), Buddhists (0.69 percent), Confucians (0.03 percent), and other faiths (0.034 percent).
Marital Status
Data reveals that approximately 131 million Indonesians are unmarried, whereas 137 million are married, 5 million are divorced, and 14 million are widowed. This indicates that more people in Indonesia are currently or have been married.
Demographic Bonus
With around 199 million people, or 69.03 percent of the total population, falling within the productive age group of 15-64 years, Indonesia is currently experiencing a demographic bonus. Director General of Population and Civil Registration, Teguh Setyabudi, emphasized the importance of optimizing this productive age group, noting that this demographic advantage is expected to continue until 2030.
The release of this population data is conducted biannually, on June 30 and December 31, as mandated by Law Number 24 of 2013 concerning Population Administration.
